This kākā is about to indulge in one of their favourite snacks, a huhu grub! 🤤

In the wild, they will use their strong beaks to pick apart dead wood in order to seek out these tasty wee treats.

Is it fur or feathers?

With their trademark fuzzy appearance, it's understandable why kiwi are sometimes mistaken for having a fur coat.

As they adapted to life on the ground, kiwi evolved to have fluffier hair-like feathers. This helped keep them warm and camouflage better into their respective environments, keeping them safe from any aerial predators that may be on the hunt.

We want to say a quick thank you

...since we certainly couldn't do what we do, without all of your support!

We've pretty much been 100% funded by visitors and donations, since day one.

So, the more than 15,000 native trees and shrubs that have been planted since the parks opening, and the thousands of animals we've cared for over the years have only been possible because of all of your support!

Every visit, every donation, every tree you sponsor or cute gift you buy in the shop, it all goes towards our on-going mission of conversation and education.

And we think that's bloody awesome!

So a big thank you from all of us here at Kiwi Park!

This is Lexi 👋, our senior wildlife keeper here at the park! Lexi's been with us since 2022 and plays a massive role in all the awesome work we do.

A self-confessed nerd, she loves nothing more than getting clued up on all the new and exciting conservation research. We reckon that makes her a pretty cool nerd! 😎

Her fave resident of Kiwi Park is Puku, our free-roaming Pūkeko. So much so, she will proudly state, "I'm her number 1 fan… #pukuforbirdoftheyear". Maybe something to do with why our dejected Kākā is munching her hair?!

🌿Lexi’s top eco-tip: "Don’t trust the mammals! 🦔 Even the very cute and slow ones like hedgehogs can be a huge problem for our native flora and fauna. Participating in community trapping is a great way to give the natives a helping hand."

Originally known as 'Chinese gooseberries', kiwifruit were rebranded back in 1959 and renamed in honour of their similarities to our native flightless bird.

Can you see the resemblance?

Yeah, nah!

Despite their sweet appearance, possums (and other invasive species) pose a significant risk to our native birds, wildlife, and ecosystems.

Our resident possums, Chaos and Mayhem, are part of our educational program here at the park. Participating in our daily conservation shows, they play an important role in spreading awareness about the negative impacts of possums in Aotearoa New Zealand.

🤓 The @predatorfreenz movement, supported by @docgovtnz is a nation-wide initiative, that's working hard to return New Zealand's ecosystems back to their natural state. Head over to their profiles to learn more and check out the awesome work they are doing.
