Christmas came early for the Kiwi Birdlife Park and our kākā parents! Russell, our newest South Island kākā chick hatched on December 21 and was named after his
previous handler Russell Evans, who sadly passed this year.
Russell’s being weighed and health-checked every few days before he fledges – that’s when he’s capable of flight, but still reliant on his mum and dad for food. Russell will be released up near the Abel Tasman, so the keepers are staying back as much as possible to ensure he doesn’t get too used to humans and has the best chance of survival in the wild! Stay tuned for more!
