Our first clutch of whio (blue duck) chicks from this breeding season have just been released near the West Coast!
We have had three clutches of whio this season with a total of 12 chicks in entirety. Our friends at Isaac's Conservation and Wildlife Trust and DOC facilitated the release and still have the other two clutches which are being looked after a bit longer before they are released, as well.
Whio are extremely rare, found near fast-flowing streams and are susceptible to predation by introduced predators. Only about 3,000 whio are left in the wild, meaning each whio released is a huge conservation win!
